Color and pattern of the male
Head: dark reddish-brown.
Neck: hackle deep orange-red; each feather has a strong glossy black shaft-stripe, running almost parallel to the feather-outline, ends in a point near the tip; vein black; front of the neck black.
Back and shoulders: dark reddish-brown.
Saddle-hackle: similar to neck-hackle.
Wings: black bow; distinct green-glossy black wing-bar across the wing when closed.
Primary-flights: black, except for the outer-vane, which has a brown edge.
Secondary-flights: inner-vane black, outer-vane dark-brown, forming a dark-brown wing-triangle when the wing is closed.
Breast: green-glossy black.
Belly, thighs and rear-part: black.
Down: greyish.
Serious faults
Far too light color in neck- and saddle-hackle. Far too weak shaft-stripe pattern. Broken shaft-stripe pattern.

The same deviations, but to a lesser extent. Incomplete colored wing-triangle.
Color and pattern of the female
Head: reddish-brown.
Neck: hackle reddish-orange on top, transitioning to dark-orange towards the bottom with a strong black shaft-stripe, running parallel to the feather-outline, ends in a point near the tip; front of neck salmon-colored.
Shoulders: reddish- brown; a narrow fringe along the feather-outline, against which black peppering is clustered, creating a crescent-shaped, blurred dark pattern; lighter vein contrasts clearly with dark feather-color.
Back, saddle-cushion and tail-coverts: similar to the shoulders.
Tail: steering-feathers black, except the ones on top which are similar to the shoulders.
Wings: bow and wing-coverts similar to the shoulders.
Primary-flights: black.
Secondary-flights: inner-vane black, outer-vane reddish-brown with black peppering.
Breast: deep salmon reddish-brown.
Belly and thighs: slightly less darker then the wing-coverts.
Rear-part: reddish-brown.
Down: reddish-brown, slightly greyish.
Serious faults
Far too light neck-hackle. Lack of or broken shaft-stripe pattern. Far too light color of the tail-coverts, wing-coverts, shoulder, back, saddle-cushion and. Far too light breast-color. Lack of the crescent-shaped color cluster.
