Gold quail

Color and pattern male

Head: glossy black ground-color, very narrow edged with gold.

Neck: large feathers of the hackle are entirely velvet-black, sheen increases towards the back; smaller feathers, higher in the hackle towards the throat, velvet-black with a very narrow gold edge and  gold shaft.

Shoulders and back: each feather has a green-glossy black triangular center with warm gold-brown barbs; back-feathers with bright-gold shaft; back-feathers broad under the hackle, become narrower towards the back and longer towards the lower back.

Saddle: hackle black with bright-gold shaft and broad gold-brown barbs.

Tail: steering-feathers black; sickles green-glossy black; greater-coverts glossy black, lesser-coverts green-glossy black with gold-brown edging.

Wings: bow-feathers black with a narrow dark-brown edging; greater-coverts gold-brown with a glossy black spangle at the tip of the feather, forming a black wing-bar.

Primariy-flights: black.

Secondary-flights: inner-vane black; outer-vane mostly cinnamon-brown, tip of the feather black, wing-triangle is formed when the wing is closed.

Breast and front of neck: overall brilliant golden yellow (nanking-yellow), each feather has a slightly lighter edging and shaft.

Thighs: similar to the breast; the large feathers covering the sides of the breast are very dark-gold yellowish-brown with gold-yellow edging and light gold-yellow shaft.

Belly: slightly darker than the breast.

Rear-part: light grayish-brown.

Down: gray.

Serious faults

Deviant pattern on the neck-hackle. Reddish, too pale, or brownish breast. Too red in the gold-brown feathers. Black pattern on the breast. Lack of pattern on the primary-flights.

The above serious faults occur to a lesser extent.

Color and pattern female

Head: black, very narrow edged with gold.

Neck: hackle feathers velvety-black with a narrow, golden-brown edging that widens slightly towards the throat; the lower edge of the hackle is almost entirely black.

Shoulders, back, and saddle: very dark brown with a velvety-black sheen, with a narrow dark-brown edging, and brilliant gold-yellow shaft, the edging narrows towards the saddle.

Tail: black steering-feathers; very dark brown-black coverts with gold-brown edging and gold shaft; dark-brown support-feathers with gold shaft and gold-brown edging.

Wings: coverts similar to the back; edging broadens towards the wing-flights.

Primary-flights: black.

Secondary-flights: inner-vane very dark-brown; outer-vane very dark-brown with a narrow, not sharply defined brown at the edge, tip of the feather black.

Front of neck, breast, belly and thighs: gold-yellow (nanking-yellow); feathers on the sides of the breast, towards the wings and rear-part, are very dark-brown with gold-yellow edging and gold-yellow shaft.

Rear-part: light grayish-brown.

Down: gray.

Serious faults

Deviant pattern on the neck-hackle. Reddish, too pale, or brownish breast. Too red in the gold-brown feather areas. Black pattern on the breast. Lack of pattern in the primary- flights. Too little, too narrow, or too broad dark-brown side-edging on the back, saddle, tail and wing-coverts or too broad gold-yellow shafting. Too much brown in the feather-area on the wings.

The above serious faults occur in minor degrees.
