Red blacktail
Color and pattern male
Head, neck-hackle, shoulders, back and saddle-hackle: vibrant, glossy, warm, deep red; some black pattern on the lower neck, preferably covered by the overlying hackle feathers and not conspicuous from the outside, are permitted.
Tail: black steering-feathers; sickles and by-sickles deep glossy green black; coverts almost entirely glossy green black, the red border widening as they approach the saddle feathers.
Wings: thumb feathers black, edged with red; feathers closest to the body red on the surface, so that the wing, when closed, displays a uniform, warm, deep red color; coverts glossy, warm, deep red.
Primary-flights: inner and outer vanes deep red, with a black edge along the vein on the outer vane, this edge is fairly broad at the base of the feather and very narrow at the tip.
Secondary-flights: outer vane red, the red should extend sufficiently around the tip of the feather to show a red wing tip when the wing is closed; the red of the inner vane increases as the secondaries are positioned further inward; the remainder of the secondaries are black.
Breast and belly: glossy warm deep red.
Rear-part: dark red.
Down: red.

Tail: black steering-feathers, with some red in the upper feathers permitted.

Note male and female
Upper plumage glossy, warm, deep red, except where black is required in the standard. Feathers free of light shafts, mealy deposits, or fine black peppering. The smaller the color difference in the male between the hackles and shoulders on the one hand and the breast, belly, and thighs on the other and between the neck-hackle and the remaining red plumage in the female, the better.
Serious faults male and female
Uneven, too light, or lackluster color. Significant differences in color depth between different feather groups. Shaft stripe markings in the neck and saddle feathers in roosters. Black on the wing surface, breast or back. White in any part of the plumage. Grayish-black down color in any part of the plumage. Coppery sheen. Black pattern and/or peppering on the inner vane of the primary-flights. Absence or near absence of pattern in the primary-flights. Strong hairy feathering, fringe on the plumage.
Faults male and female
Very minor deviations in color pattern. Absence of the black spot on the lower feathers of the female's neck-hackle. Absence of the black edge near the feather tip on the outer vane of the primary-flights.
